BBVA Compass is paving the future of online checking and finances, our most highly-recommended option for aiding customers with their daily life events.

BBVA Compass opened its first branch in 1964 in Birmingham, Alabama and has since then, has continued to gain attention due to its innovative and considerate service. In the last 50 years, it was the first to introduce all-day banking, the first bank to open on Saturdays, and ranks as one of the biggest banking establishment in Alabama, Texas, and Arizona. If that’s not enough, it has won various awards and further recognition, including being named one of the best banks in America (2015-2016) by Money magazine. Today, it operates over 600 branches in America with no ATM withdrawal fees from 55,000 Allpoint and BBVA Compass ATMs.

Amongst many of the advantages that it holds over other banks, arguably its best feature is that BBVA Compass does not utilize a ChexSystems review when opening new accounts for customers. ChexSystems is a credit reporting and check verification agency that lists people with prior banking infractions, no matter how insignificant they may seem. Many banks use this service and it is the reason as to why people are denied an opening a bank account. Thus, BBVA Compass is the ideal choice for customers with a bad credit score as there’s no credit check performed.

Account Features and Fees

BBVA Compass offers four different types of checking accounts, Free Checking, ClearConnect Checking, Interest Checking, and Easy Checking.

The Free Checking account requires no monthly or yearly cost, despite offering full-service features, not limited to their Mobile Banking app. It takes only a few minutes to apply for a Free Checking Account. The minimum amount to open this account is just $25. One of the greatest aspects of the Free Checking account is that with the free Visa Debit Card, customers can earn cash back rewards for everyday purchases. For $10, a personalized photo can be applied on the card. More features for this bank account includes:

  • No ATM fees at BBVA Compass ATMs
  • Free Online Banking and Mobile Banking, plus Mobile Deposit and Bill Pay
  • Free Customizable Alerts
  • Free online and paper statements
  • Free unlimited check writing
  • A free Visa Debit Card

Furthermore, customers have the option to customize their account by adding optional Custom Features to meet their specific banking needs. For $2, BBVA Compass offers unlimited cashier’s checks and an unlimited supply of standard checks and 50% off other styles. With an extra $3, new users will be provided with a 3 X 5 Safe Deposit Box. And an additional $5 allows free ATM transactions via another bank’s ATM. Users will receive up to four automatic rebates per statement cycle for ATM fees charged by other banks. Applying any of these components results in an estimated monthly fee – but it is your decision entirely if you want the extra features.

With the ClearConnect Checking account, users pay a $0 monthly service charge, as well as never having to worry about fulfilling any requirements to waive monthly fees. In comparison to other banks which demand a monthly service fee of between $10 to $12, BBVA Compass asks for nil. Better yet, it offers the exact same features as the Free Checking account (see above). But what makes it different is that it allows customers access to their account wherever and whenever digitally while on the go. With a ClearConnect Checking account, you can take advantage of no ATM fees from 55,000 ATMs worldwide.

If customers want to earn some interest from their account balance, Interest Checking is the best choice. This account offers next-level features and a more robust suite of Online and Mobile Banking Services. While it comes with a $25 monthly service charge, there are ways to work around and avoid this cost by meeting at least one of the following requirements:

  • Maintain an average daily collected balance of $5,000 (minimum) in your BBVA Compass ClearChoice Interest Checking account
  • Maintain a combined average daily collected balance of $25,000 in your BBVA Compass ClearChoice Interest Checking and BBVA Compass ClearChoice Money Market Account
  • The primary account holder is enrolled in the BBVA Compass Premier Personal Banking Program and maintains a Premier Personal Banking status.
  • The primary account holder is a BBVA Compass Global Wealth Client

This account comes with several tantalizing features with upgrades from the previous accounts. The added features offered includes:

  • Tiered interest rates – customers will earn individual rates on the portion of their balance in each balance tier
  • One free personalized BBVA Compass Visa Debit Card
  • Two automatic rebates per statement for ATM fees charged by other banks
  • Premium Checks at no charge, plus 50% off other styles (shipping and handling fees apply)
  • Avoid the monthly Service Charge on one BBVA Compass ClearChoice Money Market account

The final account offered at BBVA Compass is called Easy Checking. Perfect for customers that are starting over or just getting started, this account helps customers rebuild their finances. It is designed to offer a second chance with checking, had people not qualified for any of the prior checking accounts. While it does offer similar features to the Free Checking and ClearConnect Checking accounts, one main difference of Easy Checking is the concrete $13.95 monthly service charge. But not all hope is lost, after 12 months of the Easy Checking account, customers are given the opportunity to upgrade to another BBVA Compass consumer checking account if they meet both of the following requirements:

  • Their BBVA Compass Easy Checking account is in active status
  • Their BBVA Compass Easy Checking account has a positive balance

More Banks That Do Not Use ChexSystems

For customers that are turned away because they are considered as having ‘bad credit,’ we highly recommend approaching a bank that requires no credit checks to open a bank account. BBVA Compass is our first recommendation as it is one of the rare banking establishments to offer convenient check accounts with satisfying interest rates and very few fees.

However, other possible banks to check out that do not refer to ChexSystems are:

BBVA Compass is undoubtedly the best bank to turn to for avoiding ChexSystems. It offers a range of basic and straightforward checking accounts without any hidden costs or clauses. Praised for its unmatched service and smooth online and mobile access, it’s no surprise that BBVA Compass continues to overshadow its competitors.
