Home Depot Truck and Trailer Rental Review Moving VIEW BEST MOVING

You probably know of Home Depot as that huge tool and hardware store, but did you know that they also do truck and trailer rentals there too? That’s right. If you’re planning to move or need a means of transporting items that are too large to fit inside of your car, you can go to Home Depot to rent a truck or trailer to help you out.

They have a wide variety of different types of trucks and sizes to choose from depending on what you need to move and plenty of locations around the United States to go to. Plus if you rent your truck or trailer from Home Depot, you can also grab some boxes, tape, and whatever else you made need for your move while you’re there at the store!

Home Depot has three of their own trucks that they rent out, but the four different sized moving trucks that you can rent from there are actually Penske trucks. The three that belong to Home Depot are a cargo van, a flatbed truck, and an HD moving box truck, none of which are too huge in size but they’re perfect for moving smaller items or a smaller amount of items. They’re also great if you buy something from Home Depot that is too large to fit in your car and need a way to get it home.

The fact that Home Depot is not only a truck rental company but also a tool and hardware store is what really sets them apart from other truck rental companies though. It’s a one stop shop for anything you could possibly need for a move. Their rates are fairly low too in comparison with some other truck rental companies, and the three trucks that they own are all pay by the minute too which is great for if you’re only moving across town and don’t need the truck all day long.

What Does Home Depot Offer?

Home Depot is pretty unique from other truck rental companies. They offer more of a check out, check in system with their truck rentals rather than a reserve, pick up as designated time and place, and return at designated time and place system.

They offer three different trucks that they own but do not offer auto towing on any of these trucks because they are all too small to tow a vehicle. One great thing that they do offer is their pay by the minute system which will save you a lot of money if you only need to rent the truck for a couple hours rather than all day long. They do have a few protection plan options you can add as well, some which only cover damages to the truck and one that also covers any damages to the items you were transporting in the truck.

The Moving Process

The process for renting a truck through Home Depot is a little bit more complicated than it is through other truck rental companies. You are not able to reserve the Home Depot owned trucks that they have for rent there, so rather than scheduling a pick up time and date online or over the phone, you have to look online or call to see if the truck you want is currently available at your local Home Depot store and then go to the store to rent it on a first come, first serve basis. You can reserve the larger Penske moving trucks, but you need to reserve those through Penske, not Home Depot.

Once you’ve verified that the truck you’d like to rent is available at your local store, you cannot put a hold on it, so go straight there to be sure that no one else comes and rents it before you do. Go to the tool rental section of the Home Depot store and the person working at the counter will help you out with the rental process.

The Home Depot owned trucks are all pay by the minute, so you put a deposit down (the deposit amount varies depending on which truck you rent) and then if you paid by credit card, your card will either be charged more if you have the truck for longer than what the deposit covers or it will be refunded the difference if you have the truck for a shorter period of time than what the deposit covers. If you paid with cash, you will either pay the extra amount when you return the truck or get a cash refund for the difference when you return the truck depending on how long you rented it for.

All of the trucks must be returned to the same location that you rented them from as well. This means that you cannot rent a truck from Home Depot that you plan to drive across country because you’d have no way to return it. As always, return the truck in the same condition that you got it in and with the gas tank filled to where it was when you rented it to avoid extra fees.

Pros and Cons
ProsCons
The Home Depot owned trucks are pay by the minute and very affordableThe larger moving trucks they rent out there are actually owned by Penske, not Home Depot and are a bit more expensive than Home Depot’s trucks
Home Depot is not just a truck rental company but also a tool and hardware store, so plenty of moving tools and accessories are available at the storeYou cannot use the Home Depot owned trucks for long distance one way rentals
Three truck options that are perfect for moving smaller items or a smaller amount of itemsYou cannot reserve your truck ahead of time
Conclusion

Home Depot Truck and Trailer Rental is ideal for someone who is moving a smaller amount of items that would fit inside one of the three trucks that they own, as well as for someone who only plans to use the truck for a short period of time rather than multiple days. However, if you are planning a big move that would require a larger moving truck or if you are moving somewhere far away like across the country, then Home Depot’s truck rental will not work for you.
