KitchenAid KRFF707ESS French Door Refrigerators

BEST FRENCH DOOR REFRIGERATORS

The Kenmore Elite 74033 holds the most space of any French door refrigerator system I’ve ever seen. It’s got lots of little features that make this fridge easy to love.

The first thing you’ll notice about this fridge is that every bit of design has gone in to giving you a whole lot of space. Lights are recessed to avoid getting in your way. The shelves are all adjustable and let you make the most out of whatever you want to put in here. Everything works together beautifully.

The Kenmore Elite also houses some surprises, like a grab-n-go door that’s perfect for storing sodas or juice you want to grab quickly, and a freezer door that opens at an angle, allowing for easy access to everything you’re storing. Kenmore have thought of a lot of things that make this fridge awesome.

There are some things not to like, though. The tremendous amount of space means that even though this fridge is Energy Star compliant, it still costs a bit more than average to run. There are also lots of shelves on the door that aren’t perfectly designed. Overall, though, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck with this refrigerator.

Features of the KitchenAid KRFF707ESS french door refrigerator

The interior space on the upper part of this fridge is used very well. It has several shelves that can be rotated or slid out of the way to make room for taller items. Also, each shelf has a small lip that helps contain spills and prevent them from turning into even bigger problems.

The doors contain a nice amount of storage, though the left door is significantly cut into by the ice dispenser – more on that later.

There are two crisper drawers in the upper space that each have the ability to control their moisture. Below them is a full-width drawer that’s perfect for storing cold-cuts, cheese, or even platters for a party.

Overall, you’re going to have the space and flexibility you need to store anything you want in this fridge.

Door storage

One issue to look out for is the door storage bins. The top lip of these areas is a bit lower than I’d usually like, making it easy for bottles to become jostled or fall out when the door is moved quickly.

Ice dispenser

There’s a bit of a tradeoff that occurs with this ice dispenser. On the one hand, the dispenser holds up to 3 lbs of ice, and that’s a whole lot more than you’ll see in other French door designs. But that large amount of ice ends up getting stored in a space where you’d otherwise have more in-door storage, so that sacrifice is made in exchange for the ice.

The dispenser itself works wonderfully and even allows you to lock or unlock the ice dispensing in case you want to do so for any reason. This is great if you’ve got kids who might accidentally trigger the ice dispenser and don’t want them to be surprised.

Alarm system

One great feature in the KitchenAid is the ability to turn off or on a timer alarm for the fridge. When turned on, a beep will be admitted if the door is held open for more than a minute. It’s great to be able to turn the alarm on when it’s needed but then turn it off when, for example, I’m cleaning out the refrigerator and I know the door will be open for a long time.

The beep isn’t terribly loud but it does do a good job of reminding folks to make their selection and then move on quickly.

Freezer

The freezer layout is pretty standard for a French door system, with one main exception we’ll cover in a minute. The bottom drawer slides out away from the fridge to reveal three shelves of freezer storage. These shelves all run very smoothly and make it easy to get things in and out. These shelves do a good job of holding lots of items while not letting things get too chaotic and cluttered to use.

Pizza pocket

The KitchenAid contains a dedicated drawer that hold frozen pizzas, or other similarly-shaped boxes, upright and out of the way of other items. It’s easy not to notice how difficult it is to store such items in regular freezer setups, but once you see how much easier things are with them out of the way, you won’t want to go back.

Cost of running

The KitchenAid comes in pretty high in terms of the cost of running it. Tests have shown it’ll cost about $93 to run for a year, which is high given its interior capacity.

Warranty

The KitchenAid is built to last but it still comes with an impressive warranty. For the first year, you’ll have coverage for everything including parts and labor from the manufacturer. After that, you’ll have the option of an extended warranty that covers the main system for five years and the compressor for 10 years. That’s in line with industry standards for this kind of equipment.

Conclusion

The features in this KitchenAid refrigerator are at the top end of what you’ll find on the market today. The layout of the interior is very intuitive and you’ve got a lot of great customization options. They have thought through lots of little pieces and the whole experience here is very positive.

That being said, you’ll find that this is one of the more expensive refrigerators out there. It’s still pretty easy to find these at MSRP, which is around $3,300. That number puts it right at the top of the range of what you might spend for a fridge this size.

The KitchenAid does deliver in all the key areas, but whether or not it’s worth such a heavy price tag will come down to your personal preference. The large ice dispenser, the extra drawers and space all make this an ideal fridge if you like to entertain or if you’ve just got a whole lot of groceries to store each week. If that’s what you’re looking for, then look no further than the KitchenAid.
