The Kenmore Elite 74033 holds the most space of any French door refrigerator system I’ve ever seen. It’s got lots of little features that make this fridge easy to love.
The first thing you’ll notice about this fridge is that every bit of design has gone in to giving you a whole lot of space. Lights are recessed to avoid getting in your way. The shelves are all adjustable and let you make the most out of whatever you want to put in here. Everything works together beautifully.
The Kenmore Elite also houses some surprises, like a grab-n-go door that’s perfect for storing sodas or juice you want to grab quickly, and a freezer door that opens at an angle, allowing for easy access to everything you’re storing. Kenmore have thought of a lot of things that make this fridge awesome.
There are some things not to like, though. The tremendous amount of space means that even though this fridge is Energy Star compliant, it still costs a bit more than average to run. There are also lots of shelves on the door that aren’t perfectly designed. Overall, though, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck with this refrigerator.
Inside this refrigerator is plenty of space for any groceries you might bring home. I’m always happy when I see a whole lot of customizable shelves and this one has plenty. They all hold up well wherever I place them and are very easy to move.
The top section contains crisper drawers and even a full-width drawer that’s perfect for storing cheese or cold-cuts. I like having that kind of a dedicated space. It’s wide enough to use for a full party platter if need be.
The crisper drawers themselves contain humidity control devices which work reasonably well. The full-width bottom drawer also allows me to have some degree of control over the temperature there, which is nice to have.
The unit has an in-door water and ice dispenser but still manages to get a lot of storage in both doors. The biggest issue I have with the layout of the space is these in-door shelves. I typically want to use those for drinks but bottles tend to fall out when the door is moved quickly, sometimes even when it’s moved slowly.
If you’ve never seen a system like this, it’s pretty interesting. The right door of the Kenmore has a secondary hinge that can be opened without opening the door itself. Here you get access to several shelves where you might hold juice, other soft drinks, or dairy products.
This feature helps with keeping the fridge cold. It’s easier to get in and get your drink without having to open up the whole door and expose everything inside to the warm air. The hinge system works well and should hold up for a while.
The one issue here is that it’s easy for items in the outer part of this door to get jostled as the door is opened and closed. Again, you’ll have to be careful with this part especially if you’re storing anything that will spill easily.
The dispenser for water and ice is much slimmer than others in this field. It doesn’t seem like there would be enough space to dispense both crushed and cubed ice, but it can indeed do that. It’s a bit surprising, but the dispenser works well and there’s still plenty of room for in-door storage on this door.
The door on this freezer does not slide out like others I’ve seen. Instead it hinges at the bottom and allows access to all of the area inside the freezer. This adjustment prevents things from getting buried in the bottom of the freezer bins. The freezer also contains an extra storage bin for more ice, if you want it.
One problem with the Kenmore is that it’ll cost much more to run than other similar refrigerators. That is mostly due to the tremendous amount of space being kept cool here.
The Kenmore comes in at 29.6 cubic feet of capacity, a really healthy number. It should come in at a cost of about $90 per year to run, which seems a bit high, but breaking it down by cost per cubic foot, this refrigerator actually comes in a bit more efficient than other products in this category.
The Kenmore Elite is at a low point on its sales cycle right now, so it’s going to be a bit tough to find for retail price.
If you can track down a Kenmore for its retail price, you’ll be getting a pretty great deal. The features here are top of the line, and it’ll come backed with a 10 year warranty from Kenmore, who are consistently very reliable when it comes to holding up their end of a deal.
This is one of the best French door refrigerators on the market, which is probably why it’s so hard to find at the moment. If you’re looking for a fridge with plenty of space, lots of customization options, and a relatively efficient operating system, this is definitely the one for you.
Be aware of the price you’re being asked to pay if you go to a third party buyer, which might be your only option at this point in time. If you’re asked to pay very high above the original retail price, at a certain point this will become less of a great deal.
But with that being said, this fridge should serve you and your family well for years to come. Just make sure to take it easy on the doors, especially if you have spillable bottles or containers in the in-door storage shelves.
